Is this tinnitus or hearing loss?

Question: Is this tinnitus or hearing loss?

(Posted by: Erwin on 2010-02-03 13:52:48)

I get the occasional ringing in my ears, but its not constanant and only happens every now and then for anywhere from a couple of seconds to two or three minutes. It does not happen often but like once a day. It usually happens when its relativly quiet. I am also sometimes not able to hear people from a short distance when there is alot of backgraound noise. some people also say i talk loudly but i dont hear my self as that loud. and by loud i mean yellying. So what exactly is wrong with me. Im 14 and listen to a lot of music, but not loud enough so everyone can hear.

Hi Erwin, I am pleased to note that you do not listen to extremely loud music. This will save your hearing for many years. You are obviously having intermittent tinnitus i.e. ringing in your ears. In addition to loud music tinnitus is also caused by ear infections, allergy problems, and some commonly used medications. These include aspirin, tylenol, and some prescribed medications. There are some medical conditions which cause tinnitus. These include head injury, Eustachian tube dysfunction and idiopathic causes. If you are still concerned it will be good for you to see a physician.
