Question: Hypnosis for tinnitus relief?
(Posted by: venice on 2009-11-04 11:04:45)
I have recently been diagnosed with tinnitus and have not been able to find any relief from the constant ringing. "White noise " like a fan or soft music does not help me because it is still noise! Has anyone tried hypnosis to deal with tinnitus? Have you found any other relief? Any help is appreciated!

Hypnosis might be able to help with tinnitus. While a lot of the research is 'case-based' instead of randomised controlled trials, there is some evidence that it can be effective. There is a review here: ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/ pubmed/ 19205165 And more information on hypnosis and how it works here: hypnosisandsuggestion.org Many patients with tinnitus often find speaking with a psychologist useful too. Often the things we do to try to control the symptom can counter-intuitively make us focus on it more, a psychologist can help you find more satisfying strategies. Best option could be a psychologist who uses hypnosis: asch.net

Yeah, you simply diagnose with tinnitus. I guess that that's just the way it is

Http:/ / psychcom/ asc/ hyp/ painhypn.html Hypnosis is of value in pain management - it allows the suppression of signals to the brain. It should be even more effective for tinnitus as the brain is better tuned to blocking out noise than pain. I say go for it.

I had that about 30 years ago, and it eventually went away on it's own after just a few weeks. More recently it started again, but sounds a bit different than 30 years ago, and has continued for about three years now. My doctor said there was no treatment he could recommend. I have not tried hypnosis, but I did find that it is greatly reduced after using ear wax removal drops on a fairly regular basis. If I forget to use the drops for too long, the increased 'volume' reminds me. Apparently I have fairly fast wax production, so it might not make any difference for someone that does not. If you do find an effective alternate treatment, or a cure, I would be very interested in learning about it.

I don't think hypnosis can help in tinnitus although it may calm you down and make you a wee bit stress free (stressed you get due to tinnitus!!) You should consider other relaxation techniques to conquer anxiety due to tinnitus. As tinnitus could be quite suffering, you need to first of all calm yourself to carry on with your normal, day to day life. A lot of biofeedback techniques and other therapies are on offer but yoga may help you a lot more. Try acupuncture instead which seems to have a higher rate of success in tinnitus, next only to herbs Herbal remedies can be used to support all body systems involved in helping the ear to perform its tasks of clear hearing and balance, as well as the circulatory, cardiovascular, and nervous systems. Some of the most common herbs used are • Ginkgo Biloba is excellent for a number of cerebral and circulatory disorders. It is probably the most widely-used herb for tinnitus and many sufferers swear by this natural ingredient. • Rosemary dilates and strengthens blood vessels and is an excellent circulation tonic. Rosemary is particularly useful for tinnitus that is caused or worsened by high blood pressure and other circulatory conditions. • Avena Sativa is effective in reducing high cholesterol levels which can contribute to circulatory problems which cause tinnitus. • Wild Hyssop s also useful in reducing pain and inflammation. • Salicylic Ac. (30C) is indicated for tinnitus with loud roaring or ringing sounds, which may be accompanied by deafness or vertigo. This remedy is particularly useful in people whose symptoms began with a bout of flu, Meniere’s disease or long-term use of aspirin. Conventional medications do not cure tinnitus at all. Hope all this helps Good Luck!
