Ringing in ears, facial numbness, vertigo, clean mri?

Question: Ringing in ears, facial numbness, vertigo, clean mri?

(Posted by: Christy on 2010-01-07 12:36:03)

Hello, About 2 months ago I had a migraine that lasted for 3 weeks. I've had migraines my whole life, but not like this. The migraine brought with it facial numbness, nausea and vertigo. The numbness isn't paralysis, more like I've been administered Novocaine. It goes from my lip to my eye to my ear and is worse when touched. The migraine went away after 3 weeks. I was tested for a host of things and was a tad anemic, but that's all. I was also given an MRI, which was clean. The numbness still comes and goes and has been joined by bouts of lightheaded- ness and ear ringing. I am 32, very healthy, workout daily and eat very well. I recently cut out gluten, dairy, peanuts and artificial sweetener. My doc is great, but I am stumped and I think she is too. Any ideas? Thanks Doc. I had been considering pressing for an MS test. I get the shakes pretty badly when these episodes hit. Thanks again, Christy

Dear Christy, Your faith in your doc is both appropriate and heartening, but your malady remains undiagnosed... and I am here to tell you that something is *not* right here. Your history of migraine and constellation of evanescent symptoms are indicative of a possible neurologic disorder. It could be trigeminal neuralgia, atypical migraine syndrome... or even early signs of demyelination. You must consult a neurologist - and if your "stumped " doc already is one, have her refer you to one associated with a teaching hospital. -ENT MD x30y
